Biography

David Gottlieb is a first-year Masters student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying under Daniel Becker. An award-winning composer, he was the recipient of the Hilda K. Nitzsche Prize in 2010 and the David Halstead Music Prize in 2008. His works have been premiered at the New York Summer Music Festival, read by the Daedalus Quartet, and performed by ensembles and players coast to coast. A recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, David received his B.A. magna cum laude in both Music and Diplomatic History while studying composition with Jay Reise, Andrew McPherson, and David Ludwig. Beyond his compositional studies, David founded the University’s first online Classical radio show, proposed and launched a student blog for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and as president of the Brazilian percussion group PennSamba, helped build up the Music Department’s first world music ensemble from a mere 4 players to an 80-member behemoth in a 2-year span. When not composing, David enjoys Mahlerian hikes through the San Francisco wilderness, cooking meals he should probably use a recipe book for, and finding exotic microbrew selections.
